Canine parainfluenza virus (CPIV) is a highly contagious respiratory virus and is one of the most common pathogens of infectious tracheobronchitis. Kennel cough is a non-life-threatening cold-like condition that causes coughing and other symptoms in dogs. It can also be passed from cats to dogs and vice versa, and from dogs to humans with weakened immune systems
Transmission:
Canine Parainfluenza Virus is also commonly known as Kennel Cough due to the fact that it is usually contracted from other infected dog within close quarters, such as in kennels. CPIV is excreted from the respiratory tract of infected animals for up to 2 weeks after infection and is usually transmitted through the air. Detection and treatment are crucial, as the spread can be rapid in high density facilities such as shelters and kennels.
Symptoms:
Some dogs may not show any signs of the condition and can pass it along undetected. However, symptoms may include:
- Coughing (dry and moist)
- Low-grade fever
- Nasal discharge
- Apathy
- Loss of appetite
- Pneumonia (in serious cases)
