Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium that infects the gastrointestinal system of animals and humans causing peptic ulcers and other gastroenterological distress. Although H. pylori does not natural infect rodents, infections can be common among research animals due to its use as a research model.
Transmission:
H. Pylori is present in nearly half the earth’s human population, making it the most widespread infection in the world, and there is evidence it can be passed from humans to research models. These bacteria also spread through contact with the saliva or other body fluids of infected humans or animals. In research settings, it is known that H. pylori can be transmitted through food, water or bedding. In human infections, it’s more common in countries or communities that lack clean water or good sewage systems, such as developing nations.
Symptoms:
Most cases of H. pylori infection do not display any signs or symptoms, however, this may be a result of the individual’s resistance to H. pylori’s painful effects. In many species, signs or symptoms do occur with H. pylori infection, which may include:
- Vomiting.
- Dehydration.
- Poor appetite.
- Bowel sounds.
- Abdominal pain.
- Weight loss.
- Diarrhea.
- Weakness.
