As a newlywed, Tim came home troubled by industry practices that prioritized sales over environmental concerns. His Quaker heritage provided the moral framework for what would become Quip Labs. Environmental consciousness would become the foundation of everything that followed.

The Seeds of Innovation

Barksdale Mill

Tim Hidell stands atop a flour-filled train car, solving a mold problem that threatened a major school lunch contract. His solution: an iodophor that cleaned without corroding aluminum and highlighted problem areas under UV light. A simple and sensible solution grounded in chemistry.

1985

From the Ground Up

300-Square-Foot Garage

Tim establishes Quip Laboratories in a modest garage on the Christina River. Two small mixing tanks and raw materials in tractor trailers - but it was enough to start producing quality products aligned with his values. The name was chosen because it was short, easy to remember, and stood out.

1980s-90s

Building the Foundation

Partnership in Action

Tim and Christine built the company together in earnest, balancing growing family responsibilities with business demands. Their commitment to quality was evident from the start: when Tim built the quality control lab on their property, it had air conditioning and heat even when the main office didn't.

1990s

Finding Our Purpose

Pivot to Life Sciences

After success with companies like Perdue, Tim recognizes the need to find where Quip Labs can do the most good. A friend suggests approaching AstraZeneca, changing the company's trajectory forever. Whether protecting groundwater or protecting research, the mission remained the same: using chemistry to make the world better.

Landmark Partnership

Research & Pharma

A landmark order from GlaxoSmithKline - so large it required multiple delivery trips - solidifies Quip Labs' entry into life sciences. This partnership approach would define the company's future, building relationships that span decades rather than just completing transactions.

2025

40 Years Strong
