Have Sick Research Animals? 5 Tips for Better Disinfection!

1. Know your Pathogens.

Different disinfectants offer different levels of efficacy and knowing which bacteria and viruses your facility is most likely to encounter will help you know which disinfectant to use. For example, as you can see by filtering our chemical products by efficacy claims, Canine Distemper Virus has a completely different set of recommended products than Vaccina Virus. You can learn about your specific pathogens, as well as how to eradicate them by using our Encyclopedia of Common Pathogens.

But how do you know which pathogens your facility is most susceptible to? Our facility hygiene experts are well-versed in the types of bacteria and viruses you’re most likely to face, and we even offer environmental monitoring services to tell you exactly what’s in your facility.

2. Clean Smarter.

The first step to making sure you’re protected against pesky pathogens is to make sure you’re not providing them opportunities to breed and survive. This means removing soils and ensuring that you’re taking adequate measures to clean your facility. Using an ATP meter, such as the AccuPoint Advanced, is a great way to make sure that you’re cleaning effectively. We also offer many cleaner/disinfectant combination products that can, depending on your needs, help you clean and disinfect in a single, labor saving step, such as our newest phenolic cleaner/disinfectant, Phenex-Cel.

3. Know where to find your SDS sheets.

Safety Data Sheets are designed to provide comprehensive information about the chemicals around your facility. Make sure you know where your facility keeps records of the SDS sheets for all chemicals used. These sheets have all the information about what safety equipment is required, what chemicals you’re really dealing with and what to do in case of an accident. They are required by law to be available to you, and every product we produce has an SDS sheet that can be found online.

4. Know your rates and times.

Some products may have multiple uses and require different dilutions and/or contact times for these specific actions. Making sure you’re using the right dilutions and contact times will increase your chances of eradicating bacteria and viruses, and create a safer environment for your work. You can find the contact times and dilution rates on the label of your chemical products, or you can ask a Quip Labs representative to clear things up if you have any further questions.

5. Compliment your chemicals.

Maybe you’ve already got some effective chemical cleaners and disinfectants, have paid close attention to use cleaning and monitoring protocols, dilution rates and contact times and have already found your SDS sheets. Well, now it’s time to make your job a little easier by exploring alternate equipment and accessories to make the most out of your chemical disinfectants.
For example, for our customers using our MB-10 Tablets, we’ve got a wide range of foggers, sprayers, ergonomic dip bottles and more to increase the effectiveness of the tablets and help you achieve biosafety more quickly and more easily than ever.
