Research Contamination: The First 24 Hours

Immediate Containment Steps
Follow these procedures before any cleaning or removal begins
Do Not Start Cleaning
Stop all routine cleaning activities in affected areas and make a containment plan.
Do Not Remove Materials
Quarantine all equipment, animals, supplies, and research materials in place until approved.
Inform and Document
Notify key personnel (vet staff, IACUC, PIs, biosafety officers) and document all affected areas before making changes.
Establish Barriers
Restrict access, implement enhanced PPE, and stop all transfers between rooms.
The first 24 hours should focus on assessment and containment rather than action. What pathogen are we addressing? How widespread is the contamination? What animals are affected? What’s the timeline of symptom appearance? What’s our potential budget for decontamination services? These questions inform every decision that follows.
This is also the time you’ll also need to notify your IACUC and any affected research teams that require information. Depending on the pathogen and your institution’s requirements, additional reporting may also be necessary. Proactive communication helps prevent confusion later.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, found chlorine dioxide-based disinfectants significantly more effective than RTU peroxide-based products against spore-forming bacteria—the most common vivarium contaminants.
Specifically, chlorine dioxide products demonstrated greater than 100-fold safety margins for spore killing while peroxide-based products lost more than 80-fold activity against spores compared to vegetative bacteria. This matters tremendously when you’re dealing with spore-forming organisms that standard disinfectants struggle to eliminate.

Setting Your Vivarium Decontamination Up for Success
By the end of day one, you should have clarity on several key points. What pathogen are you dealing with? What’s the extent of contamination? What are your timeline constraints?
