WHAT’S AN ENZYMATIC CLEANER?

What’s an enzymatic cleaner? An enzymatic cleaner is a type of cleaning solution that contains enzymes that help to break down soils at a neutral pH (typically pH 6-8). Enzymes in enzymatic cleaners, such as proteases, amylases, and lipases, are proteins that act as catalysts for reactions that break down various types of soils. Some of the benefits of using enzymatic cleaners include:

  • Assisting in the removal and break down of organic soils at neutral pH
  • Reducing bioburden
  • Cleaning with limited mechanical action in hard to reach areas
  • Offering a broader range of material compatibility than alkaline chemistries, for delicate instruments

These cleaners are also commonly used in healthcare and animal care facilities to aid in the cleaning and decontamination of medical devices and other medical equipment and utensils. They can be used in the cleaning phase of ultrasonic washing, automated rack and tunnel washers, as a presoak, or in manual cleaning.

What is the purpose of Enzymatic Cleaners in Animal Care Facilities?

Enzymatic cleaners (like our Vigor Low-Foaming Enzymatic Cleaner) have a wide range of benefits that make them a great choice for cleaning and decontaminating animal care equipment and devices, such as enrichment devices and aquatics caging in laboratory animal care facilities.

One of the main benefits of enzymatic cleaners is their ability to assist in the removal and break down of organic soils, even in hard-to-reach areas. They also have a broad range of material compatibility, making them well-suited for cleaning delicate instruments. Additionally, enzymatic cleaners are effective at low concentrations and lower temperatures than many other detergents, allowing for reduced shipping and storage needs (which is great for reducing your facility’s environmental footprint!).

Enzymatic cleaners are particularly useful in the cleaning and decontamination of animal care equipment, such as enrichment devices and aquatics caging. In fact, we recommend our Vigor enzymatic cleaner for pre-cleaning enrichment devices with an Enzyron Soaking Station prior to rack and tunnel washing. Enrichment devices often have small cracks and crevices that can harbor bacteria, which are difficult to remove with traditional cleaning methods. Enzymatic cleaners break down biofilm, making it much easier to clean and disinfect animal care equipment, ultimately helping to keep animals healthy.

Enzymatic cleaners are extremely safe to use and gentle on the environment, however it’s always important to follow all instructions for use to ensure that your caging and enrichment is getting sufficiently clean. At Quip Labs, we can even help create SOPs specifically for your use cases to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Overall, enzymatic cleaners are an essential tool for ensuring the health and well-being of animals in laboratory animal care facilities. They are effective at removing dirt, grime and biofilm from a wide range of equipment and devices, and are also better for the environment than many other traditional cleaners. To help keep your animal enrichment devices and aquatics caging in top condition, consider using an enzymatic cleaner like Vigor in conjunction with our Enzyron Enzymatic Soaking Station.
