✓ NONECategory IV — PURE Hard Surface

A different approach to fast, broad-spectrum disinfection — without the hazard profile that comes with peroxide chemistries

PURE Hard Surface is powered by Silver Dihydrogen Citrate (SDC) — a patented technology that combines citric acid with ionic silver to eliminate pathogens through a multi-mechanism attack. It's colorless, odorless, ready to use, and leaves no dulling residue on treated surfaces.

For research and life science facilities evaluating alternatives to higher-toxicity disinfectant chemistries, PURE Hard Surface offers a compelling combination: fast kill times, a cleaner EHS profile, no PPE requirements driven by toxicity concerns, and compatibility with food contact surfaces without a post-sanitization rinse.

Unlike bleach, ammonia, or phenol-based disinfectants, PURE Hard Surface contains no bleaching agents, no harsh solvents, and no VOC-emitting compounds. It is registered with NSF International under Nonfood Compounds (D2, #144518) and is certified Kosher, Pareve — reflecting an exceptionally clean formulation.

Category IV is the EPA's lowest toxicity classification, reserved for products that present minimal acute hazard under normal conditions of use. No signal word ("Danger," "Warning," or "Caution") is required on the label, and no first aid statements are mandated. This simplifies EHS management, PPE documentation, and safety training for facilities working under tight regulatory oversight.

PURE Hard Surface achieves a 30-second kill time on SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), Influenza A (H1N1), Human Coronavirus, Rotavirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Adenovirus Type 2, Avian Influenza, HIV-1, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella enterica.

Registered with NSF International under Nonfood Compounds (D2, #144518). PURE Hard Surface can be used on food contact surfaces — countertops, equipment surfaces, processing areas — with no potable water rinse required after sanitization. This is a rare attribute for a disinfectant with broad-spectrum kill claims.

SDC works differently than quaternary ammonium or peroxide chemistries. Microorganisms recognize citric acid as a nutrient and actively transport SDC through membrane transport proteins. Once inside, silver ions irreversibly bind to DNA and intracellular proteins, shutting down metabolic and reproductive functions.

PURE Hard Surface is EPA-registered for efficacy against bacteria, drug-resistant organisms, viruses, and fungi. All bactericidal testing conducted with a carrier population of ≥104–106 CFU/carrier; virucidal testing requires ≥104 dried titer with ≥3 log reduction. Kill times are from the EPA accepted label (May 25, 2021).

Note on tuberculocidal coverage: PURE Hard Surface does not carry a registered tuberculocidal claim. Facilities requiring tuberculocidal disinfection as a baseline for biosafety protocols — common in BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments — should review Anlage QTB or other products in the Quip Labs line. All efficacy data above is sourced from the EPA accepted label (May 25, 2021) under EPA Reg. No. 72977-5.

PURE Hard Surface is formulated for environments where minimizing chemical hazard is as important as delivering efficacy. It carries EPA's lowest toxicity classification, contains no VOCs, and requires no PPE driven by toxicity concerns — making it an efficient choice for EHS teams managing lab chemical inventories, SDS binders, and worker safety programs.

No VOCs

PURE Hard Surface contains 0.00% volatile organic compounds (0.000 lbs/gallon). No chemical odor, no ventilation requirements driven by VOC exposure, and no contribution to indoor air quality concerns. This matters for closed laboratory spaces, cleanrooms, and vivaria where air quality can affect personnel and research animals alike.

No Bleach, Ammonia, Phenols, or Phosphates

PURE Hard Surface contains none of the chemistries that most commonly drive PPE requirements, surface damage, and secondary exposure concerns in research environments. No bleaching of treated materials, no harsh fumes, and compatible with the broad range of hard, non-porous surfaces listed on the EPA label.

No Rinsing Required

The odorless formula requires no post-application rinsing on non-food-contact surfaces. On food contact surfaces, it operates as an EPA-registered sanitizer with no rinse required after the 60-second contact time — removing a step that many competing products require and simplifying workflow significantly.

NSF D2 Listed · Kosher Certified

Registration under NSF International's Nonfood Compounds program (D2, #144518) confirms the formulation and label meet food safety regulations for nonfood compounds used in food establishments. Kosher Pareve certification reflects an exceptionally clean ingredient profile.

Frequently asked questions

The EPA requires every registered pesticide (including disinfectants) to carry a signal word based on its acute toxicity profile. "Danger" is required for Category I products, "Warning" for Category II, and "Caution" for Category III. Category IV — the classification assigned to PURE Hard Surface — presents such minimal acute hazard that no signal word is required at all, and no first aid statements are mandated. For EHS teams, this distinction has practical downstream implications: it can simplify PPE program documentation, reduce risk classification tiers for hazard communication, and ease chemical inventory review processes. It does not eliminate the need to maintain an SDS on file, and users must still follow EPA label directions. But when you're managing a large chemical inventory and working with regulatory teams, the difference between a "Caution" product and a Category IV product is real.
The key differences lie in toxicity profile, surface residue, and odor. Many standard lab disinfectants carry a "Caution" signal word (Category III), produce a characteristic chemical odor, and can leave foamy or visible residue on surfaces. PURE Hard Surface is EPA Category IV with no signal word, no odor, and no residue when used as directed. On kill times, PURE Hard Surface achieves 30-second efficacy against SARS-CoV-2, most influenza strains, HIV-1, RSV, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The important thing to note is that PURE Hard Surface does not carry a tuberculocidal claim, which some other disinfectants do. Facilities that require TB coverage as part of their biosafety protocol should evaluate accordingly.
No. PURE Hard Surface does not carry a registered tuberculocidal claim. Tuberculocidal registration requires demonstrated efficacy against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and this is often a baseline requirement in biosafety protocols for BSL-2+ environments and certain institutional disinfection policies. If tuberculocidal coverage is a requirement for your facility, we recommend reviewing Anlage QTB, our EPA-registered tuberculocidal RTU disinfectant.
SDC is a patented technology that stabilizes ionic silver in citric acid (U.S. Patents 6,197,814; 6,583,176). Unlike traditional antimicrobials, it works through a "Trojan Horse" mechanism: because microorganisms recognize citric acid as a nutrient source, they actively transport SDC through their membrane transport proteins. Once inside the organism, silver ions irreversibly bind to DNA and intracellular structural proteins, shutting down metabolic and reproductive functions. Against viruses, silver targets the viral envelope or capsid and nucleic acid directly. The multi-point attack makes SDC a genuinely different class of chemistry compared to quaternary ammonium or bleach.
Yes. PURE Hard Surface is EPA-registered for use on food contact surfaces and is NSF International Listed under Nonfood Compounds (D2, #144518). For consumer applications, spray or spread on the pre-cleaned surface until visibly wet, let stand for 60 seconds, and wipe with a clean towel or allow to air dry — no rinsing is required. For commercial food processing applications (dairies, restaurants, food processing plants), follow the Clean-Rinse-Sanitize protocol, apply and hold wet for 60 seconds, and allow to drain and air dry. Do not use on utensils, dishes, or glassware. Always follow label directions for the specific application type.
PURE Hard Surface is EPA Category IV — the lowest toxicity category — and does not require PPE based on toxicity concerns. No first aid statements are mandated on the EPA label. For eye contact guidance and full safety handling information, refer to the product SDS. Facilities may have their own internal PPE requirements independent of toxicity labeling, and EHS programs should review the SDS in the context of their chemical hygiene plans. The product's Category IV status, zero VOC content, and no-signal-word designation collectively support a minimal-PPE profile under standard use conditions.
Not when used as directed. PURE Hard Surface is colorless, odorless, and leaves no dulling residue on treated surfaces under normal application. It contains no bleaching agents that would affect material color, and its formulation is compatible with a wide range of hard, non-porous surfaces including stainless steel, glass, plastic, and polished surfaces. After the required contact time, surfaces can be wiped dry with a clean towel or allowed to air dry. One note: overapplication — saturating a surface well beyond a normal wet coat — can occasionally leave a slightly tacky feel from the citric acid in the formula. If this happens, simply wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove it.
PURE Hard Surface is classified as non-hazardous for disposal. The EPA label instructs users to avoid waste by using all material according to label directions. If disposal is necessary, offer remaining product to a waste disposal facility or pesticide disposal program — many of which are operated by state or local governments. No special hazardous waste classification applies under normal circumstances. Do not contaminate water, food, or feed by storage or disposal.
